Widespread Panic 2011/10/02 MCC, Biloxi MS

Panic ended their big weekend with a throwdown on the coast worthy of the "never miss a Sunday show" praise. The Yonder boys set the tone with a great opening set including a nice "Southbound" and a raucous cover of The Dead's "Althea". Once Panic hit the stage, the crowd was nice and loose and they launched into it with no looking back. "C Brown" and "WDYBT?" feature Dave and Jeff from Yonder respectively (definite first set highlight) and the closing monster of "Bears -> Protein -> Sewing" absolutely had the hippies running for the hallways. The second set was pure Panic, letting loose a string of greatest hits in a non-stop blast of party music that had the arena spinning on its side. I thought the upper level might come down during that "Diner" peak. Go Panic.

The Radiators - 2011/01/21 Tipitina's, New Orleans LA

The Radiators kicked off Tip's 33rd Anniversary with a run of shows back in January, commemorating not only the venue's years here on earth but also their own. One of my favorite Rads experiences hands down, by the end of the show I was in full-on noodle mode in the back corner of the balcony. The end of set one is everything you could want out of the Radiators. FISHHEAD MUSIC!

One thing is for sure, I want to party like Rads fans when I get older...

Widespread Panic 2001/05/04 Municipal Auditorium, New Orleans LA

For this years annual August 10th Panic tribute, we bring you one of our favorites - the barn burner from New Orleans 2001. From the Longhair opener to the Blackout send-off, these sets embody the punishing intensity that Widespread Panic was during the peak of Houser's tenure. For the second set, the band brings a few friends along (Warren Haynes, Chuck Leavell, Cecil Daniels...), but the light that shines here is absolutely from Mikey.
Long Live Panic.

Phil & Friends: 2001/04/20 Cricket Arena, Charlotte NC

Lineup:
Phil Lesh - Bass / Vocals
Warren Haynes - Guitar / Vocals
Jimmy Herring - Guitar
Rob Barraco - Keyboards / Vocals
John Molo - Drums

A crisp SBD from the great Phil and Friends 2001 Spring Tour - first set has a blistering "Wharf Rat -> Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad" and the second is anchored down by a huge "Dark Star", as well as a great "Help/Slipknot!/Franklin's". Besides the '99 Phriends Run, this is my favorite incarnation of the Phil thing. Definitely a hazy evening in the Queen City.

The Superjam: 2011/05/06 The House of Blues Parish Room, New Orleans LA

"Why Can't We Be Friends?"

Benevento. Porter. Deitch. Stoltz.
This was the gig where it all came together. You can almost hear the stained glass walls of the Parish Room bending from the pulsing improv that blazed from the amp stacks on this Friday night in the Crescent City. All we could do when it was all said and done was spill out into the French Quarter and try to catch our breaths.

One of my absolute favorite shows of the year, and for those that were in the house that night - a look back at the madness that left so many shell-shocked on Decatur St.
This is what Jazz Fest is all about.

Anders Osborne & Friends: 2011/02/26 Tipitina's Uptown, New Orleans LA

A fiery Friday evening that somehow careens itself from "American Patchwork" sonic rock & roll to a full-on Carnival celebration. The baddest Swede in Orleans Parish and his signature Fender were rock solid all night, and with the talent he had backing him on stage it would have been a damn tragedy had they not nailed it.
"Burnin' On The Inside" is why we have been clamoring about this guy for a while now.

Phish: 1996/11/02 Coral Sky Amphitheater, West Palm Beach FL

Coming off the heels of the legendary Head's halloween show, Phish continued it's trademark 1996 intensity with a huge two setter at the only outdoor venue of the tour. Longtime Santana percussionist Karl Perazzo guests on percussion for the entire evening and Allman Brothers Band founding member Butch Trucks sits in on a smoking "Funky Bitch" to close the show.
The grooved-out 40 minutes of "Crosseyed > Antelope" is hands down one of the greatest moments of the year, and a solid first set is highlighted by a melting "Free" and raging '96 machine gun guitar work from Trey on both "Julius" and Chuck Berry's classic "Johnny B. Goode".

The New Mastersounds: San Fran '08

A scorching hot show from the Brit super-funksters formerly known as "The Mastersounds".
They easily give anyone in the modern era of groove music a serious run for the money - no doubt about that. Sharp as an English tongue and as raw as The J.B.'s in their prime, the post-Jam Cruise San Fran gig is quite a dose of NMS's medicine. The Bay Area's own Martin Fiero stops by to assist with a little saxophone work during the second half, and greatness ensues.

It was a triumphant return to the stage for the Cheese gang and their fans this past weekend in Colorado, with 3 nights of music that saw each performance get better as the days went on. Idaho For Panic

All the way on the other side of the land of the free, Panic was quietly celebrating our nations independence with two under the radar shows in Idaho. The Botanical Garden sits right on the site of Boise's old state prison, and you can see a nice theme develop out of that. Then in typical Panic fashion the "Lawyers" drops the next night.
Go Panic.

E: Boogie On Reggae Woman

From the first notes of "Llama", it should have been very apparent how phishy the 4th of July weekend shows would be. The bands return to the southland reinforced just how ambidextrious the boys still are, with Raleigh's highlights moving around from the ridiculous "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone > Free" in the second set to the dance funk encore of Stevie's "Boogie On Reggae Woman".
Don't sleep on the "Jim > Moma" either.

E: A Day In The Life

Charlotte got right back into it with the years only "Buried Alive" - then Phish proceeded to nail down a fantastic set 1 before taking the Verizon Wireless Center to outer-space with set 2's "Carini > Fuck Your Face > 2001 > YEM". First FYF since '87 - and we got a Lizards taboot.

II: Rock and Roll > Prince Caspian, Tweezer > Slave To The Traffic Light, Bouncing Around The Room, Possum, Backwards Down The Number Line > Harry Hood, Loving Cup

E: Sleeping Monkey, Tweezer Reprise

It doesn't get much better than that first set. Strong contender for best "Gin" of the 3.0 era, the return of McGrupp and a "Sanity > Antelope" set closer. As far as the set 2 goes, it's all about the "Tweezer > Slave".

The Allman Brothers: New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

ABB closed out the first weekend with a laid back sunset gig, leaving the Jazz Fest faithful with just enough juice to stumble out into the night ahead. Gregg and Co. showed some love to Thomson, Georgia's upcoming Blind Willie Festival, and then kept on down HW 25 with a rockin' "Statesboro Blues". Even though Derek's broken ankle kept him on his ass for most of the show, he played like a man possessed with the uncontrollable spirit. Big long "Whipping Post" too.

Widespread Panic: Wakarusa

A truly psychedelic outing from the Panic boys, this massive one setter had a hard time deciding between an earthquake dance party and a glue-you-to-the-Arkansas-dirt Jimmy Herring shred-fest. Nearly 3 hours of non-stop intensity, the mainstage turned into a madhouse and quickly became rendezvous for all those folks who had been patiently pre-gaming for this one. If the weekend's previous headliners were liftoff - this was the thunderous return to Earth.

Trey Anastasio Band: The Warfield 2003

In May of 2003, The Trey Band hit the road for a small 6 city run before the big Phish Summer tour. At the Warfield gig, Big Red managed to talk old friend Carlos Santana to sit in for a few tunes in the first set - and then the entire second. They get to groove out one of the longest Way I Feel's that I've ever heard and the Mr. Completely clocks in at around half an hour. And then to top it off they encore with a Beastie Boys cover?
